Is Personal Training Worth It?
In 2008 I was involved in a project to better understand the gym member experience – why people joined gyms, how successful they were in achieving their goals and how effective they thought their own exercise regime was. The results were then going to be used to improve the customer experience – how could the fitness product be better tailored to make sure the members achieved their goals?
The results of the studywere interesting…
Our study interviewed 300 members. They had to have been a member for at least 3 months.
A snapshot of the results were as follows…
- 89% of people joined gyms to lose weight
- 91% said regular exercise had made a significant improvement in their fitness
- 11% said they had achieved their starting goal
- 14% said they had achieved some weight loss, even a small amount
- 78% of people wanting to lose weight said they hadn’t achieved any weight loss at all in the 3 or more months they had been using the gym.
- 12% said they would consider using a personal trainer to help them achieve their weight loss goals.
- 3% were using a personal trainer
These results really surprised me – if the main goal of 89% of gym members was to lose weight, but 78% hadn’t lost any at all, surely they would have been wondering why? Surely they would have at least asked for some help, even one or two sessions to get them on the right track?
It turns out that most people didn’t even enquire about personal training. I would also assume they don’t ever achieve their health and fitness goals.
In the UK, I would be willing to bet more than 90% of the population would want to lose some weight.
How many do? How many even get on the right track?
So back to the title question, is personal training worth it?
Simply put, if you are looking to achieve results, the answer is yes – personal training is worth it. You could join a gym and aimlessly go about achieving your health and fitness goals…
OR
You could enlist the services of a personal trainer who knows how to help you achieve these goals. A fitness professional who knows how to plan a fitness regime, who knows how to adapt a diet and nutrition strategy to the individual to help them achieve their aims.

The old perception of personal training is a drill sergeant type, screaming and shouting at his clients as they drag themselves around a circuit.
Thankfully, modern personal training is a million miles from that – good personal training is results-driven and a people business.
