The Gym Bar Coconut Soap Review

The Gym Bar

Coconut oil is everywhere nowadays, isn’t it? If you are in any way engaged with the health and fitness media, you will be more than familiar with the health benefits of coconut oil, coconut water, coconut milk and dare I say it, the fruit itself.

I was asked to review a product called ‘The Gym Bar‘, which is a bar of soap made using 100% pure coconut oil. …

The product itself is marketed as for gym goers, festival goers, travellers or to be used at home. I can see why it would appeal to those groups – it’s an all in one product, meaning you don’t need to carry multiple bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel etc.

It is sold with a great little cotton bag, lined with a water (and soap) proof material that makes it easy to throw in your gym bag, plus it means you don’t carry the worry that a bottle of shampoo will leak all over your clean clothes (yes, that’s happened to me before!)

If you take a look at the picture below, you’ll see the uses of the product…

I like to be thorough with a review, so I did them all…

Toothpaste

the gym bar

I was a little dubious about this one. I am familiar with oil pulling (despite having never done it myself), but thought I’d give it a go – and first. I rubbed my brush on the bar until it had foamed up……and brushed my teeth as normal. It was fine, if not a little weird. The bar has no taste as such, but there was a little ‘soapy’ nature to it. Afterwards my teeth felt fine – they were clean and had a nice smooth feel to them, but it’s just a step too far for me, so I’m back on toothpaste. That, plus I don’t want to brush my teeth with a something I’ve washed my junk with, as I’m sure you can understand.

Hair Washing

I have medium length hair, so not a huge test for any shampoo. I rubbed the bar on my bonce – probably one ‘lap’ and a little on the top before rubbing it into a lather.

Oh my goodness!

A little goes a VERY long way. I had enough lather to wash my hair, body, kids, the bathroom, my car and a couple of the neighbours dogs (probably). Honestly, this stuff really lathers up quickly and abundantly, which makes me think a bar would last for a VERY long time. You really don’t need much. Afterwards my hair was squeaky clean, which I was a little surprised at given it’s a fat-based product.

Body Washing

Thanks to the abundance of lather from my head, the rest went on my body. Not much to report here, other than it left me clean and didn’t dry out my skin. It’s also nice that the gym bar isn’t perfumed, because if you suffer from skin complaints I’m fairly sure that alcohol-based perfumes can’t help much. The gym bar doesn’t have anything like that in it though.

Shaving Foam

Thanks to it’s mind-boggling lathering properties, the gym bar is a great shaving soap/foam/bar. I found it worked really well, plus because it’s essentially a natural product I found it didn’t dry my face out in the way that lots of other products can.

The Gym Bar Review Conclusion

In previous articles, I’ve mentioned I don’t particularly like chemical-based products and think in the long run they will contribute significantly to our overall ‘toxic load’. A product like the gym bar will help you avoid this because it’s natural.

It also ticks a convenience box – rather than having to cart multiple bottles of cleaning products to the gym or wherever, one simple bar can replace lots of bottles. As a part-time minimalist, I like that.

The only claim of the product I don’t support is the toothpaste one. Yes, it would work if you have two (don’t be so cheap that you’d brush your teeth the soap you wash your nether regions with), but at 32 I’ve long been conditioned to use minty toothpaste and don’t think I’ll be changing just yet!

I like the gym bar and think its affordable price (£4.50-£6.95), especially given how long it will last, its multiple uses and its organic nature means it’s a product I will continue to use and recommend, especially if you or your family have sensitive skin.
