Why you should always wear the right workout gear

A lot of people do not realise the importance of wearing the right gear when you work out. Many of us simply opt for the cheaper options or just throw on some old sweatpants or a baggy t-shirt and battered trainers. But every kind of exercise has its own specifications for what is safe and efficient.

Comfort and range of motion

It can be tempting to wear loose-fitting clothes because they are usually more comfortable and perhaps you feel insecure wearing tighter clothes but making sure your workout clothes fit you well with help prevent skin irritation and chafing. Loose clothes can catch on equipment and get in your way whereas clothing that is too tight will restrict your movement. Decent activewear is well worth the investment to help optimise your workout and ensure maximum comfort. Fabric such as spandex and lycra is perfect for allowing a wide range of motion and stretching without riding up or becoming see-through – make sure the clothes you are buying are made of the right materials.

Sweat-wicking

Large cotton t-shirts are perfect for lounging around the house, however as these garments absorb sweat easily and retain moisture, it makes them terrible for exercising in. Consider wearing, light, breathable, and sweat-wicking fabrics instead – wicking is the ability to divert sweat from your skin and allow it to evaporate through the surface of the fabric. The right workout gear with help you feel fresh, dry and comfortable both during your workout and afterwards.

Support

This is especially important for the ladies, as a well fitted and supportive sports bra is absolutely essential if you are planning on doing any high-impact exercises. Not only can it be embarrassing when you do not have sufficient chest support, but it can be painful! Everybody is different so take the time to find the right sports bra for you.

Injury prevention

Certain exercises need specific gear in order to be carried out safely. For example, padded cycling shorts are required to make long bike rides more comfortable and gloves are needed for rock climbing in order to protect your hands. The most important piece of gear for any workout is your footwear. You should invest in shoes that are the right fit, have adequate ankle support (depending on the activity), a comfortable arch and good traction to prevent slipping.

Improve blood circulation

That pain, fatigue and cramping that you feel from exercising are due to the blood pumping oxygen to your muscles which causes a build-up of lactic acid. Compression clothing stimulates blood flow and reduces the lactic acid build-up to help improve circulation and post-workout recovery. You can find compression socks (which you may have worn on long-haul flights before), shorts, tights, calf sleeves and shirts. This clothing can be a miracle worker for DOMs.
