Perfect Rowing Programme

The Perfect Rowing Programme

We Brits are the best rowers in the world.

Since the 2000 Olympics Team GB have won 22 Olympic medals in various rowing disciplines, 9 of them Gold.

With a recent rowing history including Redgrave, Pinsent, Glover, Grainger etc, not to mention the exciting development squads currently going through the Olympic and Paralympic programmes, the sport is likely to stay strong in the UK for years to come.

Rowing is also an excellent addition to any cardio and conditioning workouts. In fact, the most popular article on my website to date is this one…HIIT Rowing Workout.

Today I was sent a couple of rowing programmes to share with Hoyles Fitness readers. These are from GB Rowing themselves and if you follow the Olympic Programme, give you a (tiny) flavour of what it takes to train for the Olympic Games.

Rowing is an excellent form of cardio and conditioning exercise – it’s whole body, relatively simple to learn from a technique aspect, is virtually no impact, super low injury risk and most of all, easy to do – most gyms will have a rowing machine.

Progress is easy to track across a number of variables – speed, time and split time. Furthermore, with a large number of training programmes and options programmed into a typical Concept2 Indoor Rower, you can perform all different kinds of rowing workouts, from sprint intervals, HIIT, steady state, timed intervals, speed intervals. Some facilities  even off crew classes – entire exercise classes purely using rowing machines!

An indoor rower takes up a fraction of the room of a treadmill, is half the cost and has so much variety from a training perspective.

On another note, one of the fantastic things about indoor rowing is the huge, worldwide community that you become a part of with just a few clicks.

You can compare your scores, times and training to literally thousands of worldwide Concept2 rowers worldwide. The rankings can be filtered by variables such as age, gender, event, country etc. Take a look here…

There is also a massive support forum containing tips on training, technique, events, challenges, teams etc.

I personally will be doing a lot more rowing in future as I have a few goals I want to achieve on the rowing machine. I’ll be keeping you all updated on my progress and the programmes I’ll be following via the training section of the blog.

If you want to buy your own Concept2 Rowing machine, you can pick one up from Concept2 via Amazon here…
