Reasons Behind Britain’s Sleepless Nights Revealed

UK bed and mattress store, Happy Beds, has analysed over 30,000 insomnia-related Tweets that have been published in the last twelve months, to reveal the topics that have been keeping the UK up at night.

Analysis of the insomnia-related social posts found that the three most common reasons were Brexit, followed by Champions League winners Liverpool FC and Game of Thrones, one of the UK’s favourite shows that had  its finale earlier this year.

#StopBrexit was found to be the most common hashtag amongst tweets that were analysed in the campaign,  with #Brexit also appearing in the top ten as well as European Union and United Kingdom appearing in the most frequently mentioned entities.

The campaign found that the top hashtags used were:

  1. #stopbrexit
  2. #sleep
  3. #ynwa
  4. #gameofthronesfinale
  5. #lfc
  6. #got8
  7. #insomnia
  8. #brexit
  9. #nowplaying
  10. #snowdonia

The top 10 most frequently mentioned entities were:

  1. Brexit
  2. Liverpool FC
  3. United Kingdom
  4. Sleep
  5. European Union
  6. Netflix
  7. You’ll Never Walk Alone
  8. Jon Snow
  9. Tormund Giantsbane
  10. Bran Stark

This year’s Game of Thrones finale clearly kept Brits up a lot, with #GoT8 and #GameofThronesFinale appearing in the top results. This wasn’t the only TV show mentioned, however, with Love Island and Line of Duty also making an appearance outside of the top 10.

Joy Richards, sleep expert at Happy Beds, commented on the campaign by saying:

“If you can’t sleep, then we recommend staying away from social media due to the ‘blue light’ emitted from phones, which actually suppresses melatonin, the chemical which helps you sleep.”
