Montmorency Sour Cherry Juice Review

Montmorency Sour Cherry Juice – All it’s Cracked up to Be?

After a particularly hard training session, I cam home to find an offer to review Montmorency Sour Cherry Juice. Two of the claims around cherry juice are that it helps to reduce inflammation and muscle soreness – given I knew I was about to be hit by a bad case of DOMS, I decided to take it on!

The review request gave me the following info on the product…

  • Researchers from Louisiana State University have found that drinking Montmorency tart cherry juice twice a day for two weeks helped increase sleep time by nearly 90 minutes among adults with insomnia.
  • The Montmorency cherry is especially high in melatonin, which is the natural sleep hormone the brain produces to maintain sleep.
  • A shot of cherry concentrate also has the antioxidant power of 103 carrots and is much lower GL than any other fruit juice because the main sugar is xylose and the Montmorency cherry is not that sweet.
  • Contains no powders, artificial flavourings, colours and no added sugar or sweeteners.

I’m immediately suspicious of nutritional products that make bold claims, so I dug around on the web a little to see what came back. It was a mixed bag.

In 2005 the FDA ordered cherry growers and distributors to stop making claims about pain and inflammation reduction properties of cherries. Despite this, further research has suggested that the compounds found in certain types of cherries DO actually help with inflammation and pain relief.

Furthermore, other sources claim concentrated sour cherry juice can help fight heart disease, help prevent cancer and help with effective sleep, with claims from some sources suggesting it’s more effective than prescribed medication. Anecdotal evidence from Amazon seems to agree.

Perhaps, like with many nutritional products the truth lies somewhere in between the good and bad. Still, I like to form my own opinions on these matters.

I use Montmorency Sour Cherry Juice in three forms…

  1. A straight shot, without any dilution.
  2. Diluted in a pint of water.
  3. Added to a smoothie.

Personally I quite like the sour taste. Doing it in a shot form is pretty sharp, but added to smoothies or diluted in water it’s absolutely fine.

Does the Montmorency sour cherry juice live up to the claims?

Possibly some of them.

I was taking it heavily before and during a recent break and was sleeping longer than I have in a couple of years. This may be down in part to the fact I was on holiday, but in reality I was still out late at night (which doesn’t help with sleep much) and still managed deep, restful sleep.

From an inflammation point of view, I think it’s impossible to tell. I seem to recover well, but I don’t have enough evidence to say it’s all down to the cherry juice. My bet is that it helps in some way, I’m just not quite sure what yet.

Overall, adding this stuff to my nutrition certainly hasn’t done me any harm and in truth may have helped with my sleeping. Why not give it a try?

In conclusion, I didn’t expect the Montmorency cherry juice to be a dramatic change, but little changes over a long time lead to big things! If you suffer from inflammation, painful joints, you take ages to recover from exercise or struggle sleeping, give it a go. It certainly won’t do you any harm and you may discover an amazing product in the process!
