How the right nutrition can give you a better life

How the right nutrition can give you a better life

Good nutrition is about much more than just having the fuel you need to get through the day. It’s about how you look, how you feel and how much you can achieve.

Get the right balance of food and supplements, and you’ll feel physically and mentally capable of taking on the world, every morning. You don’t need a complicated diet or a commitment to self-sacrifice to get there. All you need is a little knowledge of nutrition. GP Nutrition is a great place to go for advice, but here are the basics.

Nutrition for energy

If you often feel sluggish and tired, you’re either not eating enough, or you’re not eating the right foods at the right times. Forget about cutting out carbs or skipping meals. You simply can’t get the energy you need if you’re not eating enough.

Carbs aren’t evil, but they should be as natural as possible. Unrefined carbs like brown rice and oats give you constant, reliable energy that lasts for hours, rather than the quick fix you’ll get from a slice of cake.

Also make sure you eat three meals of roughly equal sizes. It’s tempting to skip breakfast or lunch to try and save time or lose weight, or to just have small snacks throughout the day rather than proper meals. Doing this leaves you tired, as it means you’re not eating much when you’re at your most active.

Remember to keep drinking water. Just 1% dehydration is enough to have a serious effect on your energy levels. By the time you’re thirsty, you’re probably already getting dehydrated so drink water regularly, even when you don’t feel you need to.

With more energy, you’ll be able to perform better at work, hit the gym more and stay on the dancefloor longer.

Nutrition for concentration

We know that some foods and vitamins can really help you concentrate.

Caffeine is an old favourite, and with good reason. It works. But we wouldn’t recommend a major coffee habit. A big caffeine hit can give you just as big a caffeine slump. Replace your double espresso with a green tea for a boost that’s just big enough to help you focus without the crash.

Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as oily fish and some nuts and seeds, are great for improving concentration (and brainpower in general). So are leafy greens, as they’re high in brain-boosting antioxidants and B-vitamins.

With better concentration, perhaps you’ll be able to get more done at work and get that promotion you’ve been after, meaning more money and more fun!

Nutrition for better health

If you’re generally fit and healthy, you’re probably not too worried about particular diseases right now. But think of eating well the same way as you think about saving for a pension. It might not give you instant benefits, but a nutrient-rich diet will help you lower your risk of cancer, heart disease, high-blood pressure in the future.

Eating well also usually means losing weight. If you stick to small, regular meals, whole-grains and plenty of fruit and vegetables, you’ll almost certainly see a few pounds drop off. As well as giving you the body confidence you want, losing weight will reduce your chances of getting a whole host of health problems.

But don’t forget the treats…

Eating healthy foods most of the time means you don’t need to worry about indulging in treats now and again. No-one should ever feel guilty about a Friday night in eating pizza or a Saturday night out drinking cocktails.

The things you eat and drink should make you happy. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, eating for a better life means knowing that everything is OK in moderation…even moderation.
