7 Jobs That Help Keep You Fit

Humans aren’t meant to be sedentary beings. Yet, many of us have jobs that require us to sit in front of a computer for eight hours a day. 

It’s no wonder we find these desk jobs miserable. They leave many feeling sluggish, unmotivated, and low on energy. 

Luckily, you don’t have to wait until quitting time to be active. There are plenty of opportunities to escape from the sedentary corporate world. 

In no particular order, here are 7 jobs that help keep you fit. 

1. Personal Trainer

When you think of active jobs, a personal trainer is probably one of the first ones to come to mind. 

Personal trainers, of course, must be in top physical shape. This allows them to demonstrate exercises for their clients and lead group workouts. 

Personal trainers should also be passionate about helping others reach their fitness goals. They should be enthusiastic about giving tips, scheduling workouts, and creating diet plans. 

To become a personal trainer, you will need certain certifications. As for formal education, a high school diploma/GED should suffice. 

2. Registered Nurse

Registered nurses are constantly on their feet. They have to make their rounds, performing tests and tending to patient needs. 

Aside from walking, there is a surprising amount of lifting involved in this job. Nurses must move equipment, support and lift patients, and do other exerting tasks. 

Nevertheless, being a registered nurse is a fulfilling career that will help you stay active. You’ll typically need either an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. From there, you can gain experience to earn your license. 

3. Photographer

Being a photographer is the best of both worlds. It lets you explore your artistic side while keeping you moving!

Many people hire photographers to capture their special moments. You might find yourself working weddings or doing engagement shoots. 

Whatever the case may be, and whether your indoor or outdoors, you’ll be on-the-go. You’ll have to move around to find the perfect angle. And, you’ll have to be ready to adjust your subjects accordingly. 

4. Independent Contractor

Independent contractors provide a variety of services. They might specialize in plumbing, roofing, or similar kinds of work. 


You’ll definitely stay active as an independent contractor. You’ll have to walk around project sites, use tools, and do some heavy lifting. It’s a great job for someone who wants to stay active and put their handy skills to good use. 

To become an independent contractor, you’ll need to gain experience and study for certification tests. Luckily, resources like NASCLA exam preparation can help you pass. 

5. Waiter

You might not realize it, but waiters have a very active job. They are on their feet for their entire shift. They have to tend to customers, refill drinks, and carry heavy plates of food. 


While the job isn’t for everyone, it’s a perfect fit for those who are more extroverted. And, you can make some decent money from tips. 

6. Postal Carrier 

Lots of postal workers deliver mail via trucks. But, there are still plenty of neighborhoods where mail needs to go right to residents’ doors. 

This is where postal carriers come in! They get plenty of exercise walking to and from houses while carrying letters and packages. 

7. Baggage Handlers

Baggage handlers are responsible for flyers’ luggage. One shift can burn quite a few calories, considering that most airlines expect you to be able to lift at least 70 pounds on your own.  

These are just a few of the many jobs out there that will help you stay fit. So, take comfort in knowing that you aren’t destined to a life of 9-5 desk work!
