4 Tips for Foot Care When Running
Foot Care When Running – Tips for Success
Flat feet, high arches, and dry skin are three of many factors that contribute to problems when running. You may want to give your best effort during meets, but your feet are the deciding force that all too often holds you back. So, how do you combat foot problems and compete in races at the pace that you desire? Four tips for effective foot care are discussed below.
1. Select shoe sizes wisely
Many do not realise the importance of picking the right size of shoes. The correct fit becomes even more important when your feet are flat or carry a significantly high arch. It is under such conditions that you may be more suited to customised footwear than settle for shoes that will bring aches and pains every step of the way. Shopping around is the best way to find running shoes that satisfy your foot type. It also may be a good idea to purchase shoes where a pedorthist is on staff. This kind of footwear specialist can make certain that the shoe you buy fits your feet.
2. Do not “get the full life” out of your shoes
While it may be true that shoes are broken in after several races, you do not want to be one of those athletes who refuse to replace shoes that are excessively worn. Footwear loses its effectiveness over time and eventually shrinks to the point of discomfort. Those who are adamant about keeping shoes with shabby structures and tread run the risk of suffering severe pain due to lack of support. It may be time to purchase a new pair of shoes if the seams of your footwear are loosening and the grips underneath are nonexistent. The average shoe can survive up to 350 miles.
3. Pay attention to sock choices
Many runners find that their shoes fit perfectly, but the socks that they wear to accommodate their footwear cause problems. You should choose socks based on the intensity of activities you plan to carry out during the day. It is not necessary to buy bulky foot coverings when you are planning to sprint or run a marathon. It is during these types of activities that you want socks that allow for breathing. Thin ankle-length accessories should be enough to suffice your need to cover your feet all while preventing them from adding unwanted pressure while running.
4. Avoid dry skin
You always want your feet to be dry, but you do not want your skin to have the same attribute. Dry skin can lead to various problems for runners that include blisters. Using a neutralising lotion that lasts throughout the day is typically the best way to decrease the possibility of dryness. Certain moisturising butters, such as shea and cocoa, may also work to combat dry skin. It is important to remember, though, that these products also present the potential of oiliness, which is equally uncomfortable during races.
Foot problems should not keep you from competing in the races that you love. Purchasing the right shoes and accessories can solve many of your podiatric dilemmas.
