Christmas Gifts for Fitness Fans: Part 1

Christmas Gifts for Fitness Fans (Or yourself, if you like fitness kit!)

If you are struggling for Christmas gifts for fitness fans in your life, don’t worry about it, I’ve come to your rescue!

If you hadn’t noticed, it’s that time of year again. A time when TV shows kids thousands of adverts for brightly-coloured plastic crap that will no doubt be sat in my living room in just a few weeks time….

A time when you eat foods you couldn’t pay me to eat the rest of the year (I’m looking at you, Christmas Pudding and sprouts)….

A time when you think it’s a good idea to drink cheap red wine because it’s been warmed up and had orange and cinnamon thrown into it.

Despite my complaints above, I do actually love Christmas!

The biggest problem I have with Christmas is buying gifts, especially for Rachel. She’s just impossible to buy for.

Here are a few Christmas gift ideas for fitness fans, or if you like fitness kit there may even be something for you here…

Adidas Weight Lifting Shoes

If you’re serious about improving your weight lifting, a solid pair of weight lifting shoes is imperative. Sports-specific footwear commonplace, but for some reason barely anyone in the gym uses weight lifting shoes.

You don’t use them for all of your training, but for squatting, clean variations, snatching, overhead pressing etc they give you a huge mechanical advantage, allowing for a much better range of movement, greater stability through the feet and a firmer surface for pressing from.

They also reduce the risk of injury because they allow you to naturally get into positions you couldn’t without the help of the shoes, meaning you can squat deeper but with better technique.

If you are buying these as a gift, go half a size larger than usual as they bind tightly when laced and strapped, so you need a touch more room than normal.

Expect to pay anywhere between £50-£200 ($76-$305), but a fantastic shoe that offers really good value is the Adidas Power Perfect 2.

Nathan Zephyr Fire 100 Hand Torch

I love this little thing! I was asked to review it a long time ago. The review item was a borrowed one – I had to send it back once I’d reviewed it, but I was so impressed I went and bought one straight away.

It’s designed for running – it has a solid velcro wrist strap and an angled head that means the light still beams ahead whilst running. I’ve used it when out climbing Snowdon and it’s dark, I’ve taken it camping and it’s my go-to weapon when I venture into the dark abyss that is our loft at home!

There are three settings on the torch – bright, brighter and flashing. The back end of the torch flashes red, meaning you are still visible from behind. It also features an alarm, so if you are out and either get lost or injure yourself and want to attract attention, it has a loud alarm to make your presence known.

It charges with a USB connection so you can charge it in the car, on your laptop or even the TV.

A multi-use torch that you can expect to pay around £40 ($60) for.

Feetures Socks

I couldn’t mention a Christmas gift list without including socks!

These socks are such a triumph of design – I didn’t think there was much variation in socks until I tried these. They are designed to fit with a firm but comfortable grip around the mid foot, heel and toes. The Feetures socks make you realise you’ve been wearing crap socks your entire life!

They don’t slip, don’t rub, are made from great quality material, wick away sweat and make you appreciate how much improvement you can get from a mundane product with just a few design tweaks.

If you are a runner, walker, cyclist or general gym user, get yourself or your friends and family a pair of these bad boys. They’ll be the best socks in the drawer, I bet!

Socks are one of the best christmas gifts for fitness fans because they are so useful, so important and yet really affordable, so it’s a seemingly mundane gift that will be used all of the time.

They usually cost around £10 ($15) for a single pair, or discounts for bulk packs.

Sigg Classic Traveller Bottle

If you exercise a lot, you’ll understand the importance of a good water bottle. Over the years I’ve experienced more than my fair share of crap water bottles – ones that leak, no matter how careful and secure you fasten the top.

That was until I started using my SIGG. It’s the Rolls Royce of water bottles. Made from a single piece of aluminium, it’s 100% leak-proof, easy to carry (even has a looped top so you can attach it to your bag etc) and doesn’t allow chemicals to leak into your drink (one of the criticisms of plastic is that as it degrades chemicals can get into your drink).

I’ve taken mine all over the place – it’s travelled abroad with me, gone to the gym with me, up mountains with me. It’s a trusty companion that hasn’t leaked once, which is more than can be said for most of my other water bottles!

Typically, a SIGG water bottle will cost anywhere between £10-£20 ($15-$30).

This is the first instalment of the christmas gifts for fitness fans. I’ve tried to go beyond the standard vests and leggings and show you a few more interesting and useful items. I own or have used all of the items I’ll be sharing in the christmas gifts for fitness fans lists, so I promise you will be buying quality gear that you or your loved ones will like!
