HIIT Treadmill Workout

HIIT Treadmill Workout

I don’t often write about ‘traditional’ cardio, but I was updating one of my Personal Training clients’ workouts and thought I’d share one of hers.

It’s a simple HIIT treadmill workout that will burn plenty of calories in a short period of time. It’s self-limiting so you’ll be able to gauge improvements in fitness and performance easily.

HIIT Treadmill workout

  • Set your treadmill to a 1% incline.
  • Start your workout by walking at 4.5kph and increase by 0.5kph every 30 seconds.
  • Maintain this regular 30 second increase until you can’t run any longer, at which point you return to 4.5kph for 1 minute and repeat the process again.

A quick word on fatigue – your brain will want to give up on a set before your body will. A good way to avoid this is to use a Heart Rate Monitor – this gives you a real version of what’s going on and how fatigued you really are! For the sake of less than £30 you will dramatically improve the effectiveness of your HIIT treadmill workouts and all other workouts you are doing.

Why This HIIT Treadmill Workout is Effective

This workout has a gentle introduction – you won’t be at a jogging pace for at least 2.5-3 minutes after turning on the treadmill.

Once you are up to running pace it’s determined by you exactly how hard you make the workout. It’s self-limiting because you decide exactly when you’ve had enough.

When you do reach a failure point, you go back to the start and repeat as many times as you like/can.

The slow start to the workout means that when you restart the workout after reaching your failure point, you have plenty of time to recover ahead of another set.

A HIIT treadmill workout will burn through calories quickly. The over-loading nature of HIIT workouts means that your progression will be quick and consistent, but be warned: these HIIT workouts aren’t easy. They are designed to be high intensity, but the trade off for high intensity is results.

You can expect to burn your way through more than 400 calories if you manage 5 sets of this, not to mention a MASSIVE improvement in your cardiovascular fitness.
