What is wrong with my knee?

Q) I wonder if you can help me to work out what is wrong with my right knee. I am in training for the three peaks challenge so I have been increasing the amount of hill walking I am doing. Last week on the way down from my longest walk so far I developed sharp pain on the outside of my right knee. It hurt every time I bent my knee and meant that I had to limp my way down. Even though there was no swelling I iced my knee that evening. It was still really stiff and painful the next day but got much better over the next 2 or 3 days. The main problem now is that I still get the pain when I’m coming down stairs. I should be doing another long walk this weekend and want to know if I am doing any damage by continuing.

I injured my ankle

Q) I injured my ankle playing football about 3 and half months ago. It was near the end of the season so I carried on playing on it and it took a long time for the swelling to settle down. At first the pain was over the outside of the ankle and this seems to have mostly settled down. Although my ankle is still a bit stiff. Since the football season started again I have noticed a sharp pain at the back of my ankle. It’s not there all the time but it is really bad when I try to strike the ball hard.

What’s causing this?

Three Peaks Challenge

It all started as a charity idea. The company I work for has an obligation to raise money for a different charity every year, through a variety of different means. Over the past couple of years this has been through sponsored swims, sponsored rows etc. This time I wanted to do something outside of a gym setting, yet still requiring a decent amount of physical exertion! I wanted to take part in a challenge, not perform an effortless row for a few minutes and throw a couple of quid in a bucket afterwards.

The point of the walk was to raise money for a children’s orphanage, and we did – £2000 in total.

After a few minutes of brain-wracking, the idea of doing the three peaks surfaced. I had always wanted to do it, and if a charity was going to benefit from my endeavours, all the better. To make it a worthwhile project for the charity we would need to do it as a team – the more people we had involved, the more money we could make. A quick phone call to my girlfriend Rachel managed to secure the first team member, and a quick group email across the company did the rest.
